I am also on the side of the slow but sure method - just like the tortoise and the hare. Westerners are always in such a rush to do something, and when it doesn't happen right away, they become disillusioned.

We must “walk” (and talk) before we can “run” (read and write)....I like that approach, it appears to be a much more normal type of way to learn Thai for people like me. Most of us outside of Thailand have jobs to hold down and real thorough learning through evening classes and hours of studying books is not feasible. Talking to Thai's and gradually building your vocabulary would seem the logical first step before embarking on a more detailed book or school course.

Talen, and if you are not around any Thais, skype comes second best (I just read that somewhere :-)

2025 - you got it. I'd put it on my calendar but mine only goes up to 2011.

I agree completely that language learning is a social activity. The books and various programs I've been using are very helpful but when it really comes down to it it's the real life interactions with Thai's that really help me to learn the language.

Another great interview Cat...hopefully one day you will interview me and we can do it in Thai, Pick any day in 2025 and I should be ready :)
