Catherine and Hugh - Another interesting read.

Last year I brought back to England a kids book titled English For Thai Kids, Pictionary (spelt correctly) vol.1. The book has loads and loads of pictures with explanatory English and Thai script in it. I'd forgotten about the book until I read this post. Thanks because I'll pick it up again and start learning by the method Hugh describes. Hugh and you (bit of a mouthful) make it all seem so easy.

Hi Jon, if you go into a regular Thai bookstore you will often find a mini-shelf of books for Thai kids learning English. They cover a full range of subject matter. The English is not always very good, but as we are not aiming to learn English it doesn't matter.

Sophie, I haven't heard of any bookstores out there selling Thai books. And I do promise to get those books out one day. I love good design and these are top quality, lovely books. I used a photo of four of them on this post: The Easy Way for Beginners to Read and Write Thai.

This is a great post with great ideas Hugh! I love books for children and would love to see you do a post about the ones you have Cat. Living in the states and not wanting to buy on-line do you know if any of these things are available to those of us here who would love to have some of these books? People often mention stores in Bangkok or Chiang Mai but those places are a little hard for me to visit. Please Cat get into that cupboard soon and tell us what you have.

Some really good advice here Hugh. Luckily I'll be living with a 4 year old so I will have ample access to childrens books :)

But you also talked about matching up English words with Thai words which is something I really hadn't thought about...There are quite a few childrens books I have seen in Thai with English translation and in English with Thai translation as well as computer games and cartoons that Fa has which will definitely help me in another direction of learning the written language as well.

What great advice, Hugh. With the plethora of bilingual books geared toward learning English, we should be able to reverse them to learn Thai. I like that we must be able to read Thai to get it and your step-by-step procedures are perfectly laid out. Thank you!
