Thanks Lana, and welcome to WLT. I finally got to your blog last night. What wonderful writing! I was mesmerized so went back to your beginnings (I'm not done yet but I'll get there, and with pleasure).

Hey, what a great blog! My Thai language development has really stalled in recent years, so great to find a place with info and inspiration to help get me back on track.

Lanas last blog post..<a href="http://www.serratededges.com/2009/02/baby-snake-outbreak.html">Baby Snake Outbreak</a>

Hah! I know! Transliteration held me back in the beginning. There is a professional transliteration style (AUA uses it) but you first have to learn it before making inroads to Thai. And again, I just couldn't get over some of their quirks because they are not logical.

As Phil mentions, it reminds me of the Brits with their different name places (which drive me a bit batty too). Leicester is pronounced Lester. Worcestershire is really Woster (ever ask a Brit to please pass the Worcestershire sauce?). It goes on and on!

Excellent post. Transliteration drives me crazy and it's been a gripe of mine for years that Thais must be on a conspiracy to ensure foreigners shall always mispronounce words. Simply look at the airport name: Suvarnabhumi. Soo-varna-bOOm-ee. Right? Nooooo.. Sa-wan-a-POOM. Just shoot me.
